  • Notes and Useful Applications for Genesis 17:3–14 from Das Weimarische Bibelwerk (1877)

    The following is my translation of the notes and useful applications for the Old Testament Reading of the Feast of the Circumcision and Name of Jesus, Genesis 17:3–14, as they are found in Das Weimarische Bibelwerk (1877). Square brackets indicate my own notes and additions. For the useful applications, I recommend the reader see this very helpful article by Dr. Benjamin T. G. Mayes.

    Note: This is the Old Testament Reading prescribed by the Lutheran Missal Project. Lutheran Service Book prescribes Numbers 6:22–27 instead.

    I. The promise and covenant of the ancestors of Abram; therefore, Abram’s name is changed to Abraham. (v. 1–8) II. The confirmation of the covenant, or the institution of circumcision. (v. 9–14)

    Annotated Translation

    3. Then Abram fell on his face (to give witness to his unworthiness, humility, deference, and thankfulness). And God spoke further with him and said:

    4. “Behold, I am (I am the true, singular, almighty God), and have (established) my covenant with you,1 and you shall be a father of many peoples (not only of the people which will descend from you according to the flesh, but rather in general of all believers from both Jews and Gentiles, Romans 4:16–17).

    1 Hebrew: “As for me, behold, my covenant shall remain with you, that you…”

    5. Therefore, you shall no longer be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham, for I have made * you the father of many peoples (Luther: “Abram means ‘high father,’ but Abraham means ‘the father of multitudes,’ although those multitudes are only indicated with one letter in his name, not without cause,” namely to indicate that these children of Abraham are made one people and one Church according to the promise and according to the Spirit, be they Jews or Gentiles.)

    * Romans 4:11, 17 (Nehemiah 9:7)

    6. And I will make you very fruitful, and will make nations of you (I will bring it about that various peoples come forth from you, not only the Israelites, but also the Ishmaelites and the Edomites, etc.);1 and kings shall also come from you (not only the kings in Judah and Israel, but rather also the Ishmaelite and Edomite kings).

    * Hebrew: “And I will make you to be become (entire) peoples, etc.” (Genesis 17:20)

    7. And I will establish My covenant between Me and you, and to your offspring after you, with their descendants (Luther: “So long as their [covenant] shall last, for Moses hereby indicates that their [covenant] shall finally cease and another come”),1 so that it is an everlasting covenant (as it pertains to the bodily benefit which God promised to the bodily offspring of Abraham, namely, the possession of the land of Canaan, the word ‘eternal’ here is used for a long time which nevertheless has its determined end. But insofar as it pertains to the spiritual benefit which God has promised to the spiritual offspring of Abraham who are all true believers, namely, God’s grace, forgiveness of sins, protecting, and blessing in this life and heavenly glory in that life, it is certainly and eternal unceasing covenant), thus, that I will be your God and your offspring’s after you (whatever good I have, and whatever can be expected from Me, that I all promise to you hereby and to your descendants; I will give you all My goods, all My salvation, indeed I will give you Myself as your own, I will love you as a Father, protect you, help you, and make you eternally blessed).

    (Jeremiah 31:33)

    1 Hebrew: “In all their continuing (that is, appointed) times, so long as they shall possess their (allotted) dwellings.” See Leviticus 7:36, 23:14 and Deuteronomy 31:13, where this explanation is clearly set forth.

    8. And will give to you and to your offspring after you * the land, since † you are a stranger to them, namely, the entire land of Canaan as an eternal (lengthy)1 possession; and I will be your God (insofar as they will prove themselves as my people).

    * Genesis 24:7

    † Genesis 23:4

    1 † In Hebrew, the word properly signifies a hidden or inconceivable time. But that this promise is also contingent, see 2 Kings 21:8.

    9. And God said to Abraham, “So now you shall keep My covenant, you and your offspring after you along with their descendants.

    10. * This is My covenant, 1 which you shall keep between Me and you, and your offspring after you: Everyone that is masculine among you shall be circumcised.

    * Leviticus 12:3; Luke 2:21; John 7:22; Acts 7:8; Romans 4:11

    1 Hebrew: “But this is the (foremost) ordinance of the covenant (and the chief article demanded in the agreement), which you shall keep with precise oversight as something that has been made between me and you, as also with your children who will come after you. It shall namely be that which… etc.”

    11. Now you shall circumcise * the foreskin in your flesh. It shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you.

    * Deuteronomy 10:16 (Romans 4:11)

    12. Each little boy among your descendants you shall circumcise when he is eight days old (until the coming of the Messiah, who will institute the Sacrament of Baptism in the stead of circumcision, Colossians 2:11–12). In the same way [you shall circumcise] each one who is born of the servants at home or that has been purchased1 from foreigners that is not of your offspring (who does not descend from your blood. In the Hebrew text it is repeated once again: He shall indeed be circumcised, both the one who is born in your house and the one who is purchased with your money).

    * Genesis 21:4 (Leviticus 12:3; Luke 2:21; John 7:22)

    1 Hebrew: “for money,” see Leviticus 25:44

    13. Thus shall my covenant be in your flesh as an everlasting covenant.

    14. And if a little boy is not circumcised in the foreskin of his flesh (whose parents fall away secretly or publicly from the true God of Israel and, out of contempt for this holy Sacrament, do not allow their child to be circumcised, and when he has come to his years and understanding, he has not wanted to allow himself to be circumcised; for this threat does not apply to those Israelite children who out of necessity had to be deprived of circumcision),1 that soul shall be cut off from his people (that man is not to be regarded here on earth as a true member of the Church, nor have a part in the kingdom of heaven, he is not to be considered as a member of my covenant or a child of grace); for the reason that he has neglected my covenant (having broken it and willfully destroyed it himself, that is, in his own person).

    (Leviticus 17:4; Deuteronomy 29:20ff.)

    1 † See John 5:4 and Exodus 4:24; in the latter place, the mother nevertheless sins terribly by tender neglect.

    Useful Applications

    I. CORRECTION: Toward unhypocritical piety, which has a great reward from God (v. 1–8). II. DOCTRINE: That we are received into the gracious covenant of God through Baptism, which was prefigured by circumcision (v. 7–14).

  • Notes and Useful Applications for Deuteronomy 18:15–19 from Das Weimarische Bibelwerk (1877)

    The following is my translation of the notes and useful applications for the Old Testament Reading of the Fourth Sunday of Advent (Memento Nostri), Deuteronomy 18:15–19, as they are found in Das Weimarische Bibelwerk (1877). Square brackets indicate my own notes and additions. For the useful applications, I recommend the reader see this very helpful article by Dr. Benjamin T. G. Mayes.

    III. A prophecy concerning the great prophet (Christ). (v. 15–19)

    Annotated Text

    15. A * Prophet, like me (and even much higher, indeed, the most excellent and highest Prophet)1 will the Lord, your God, raise up (bring forth) for you, from you and your brothers (namely, the promised Messiah, true God and man), † to Him shall you listen (receive Him with true faith and follow Him. Luther: “Here another kind of preaching is clearly promised other than the preaching of Moses, which cannot be the Law which was sufficiently given through Moses; therefore, it must be the Gospel. And this Prophet is no one other than Jesus Christ Himself, who has brought such a new preaching on earth”).

    * John 6:14; Acts 3:22, 7:37

    † Psalm 2:12

    1 † Through whom God, and through whose mediatorial office (indeed, a better reconciliation office), will establish a New Covenant, Jeremiah 31:31ff., as He had established [the Old Covenant] through my mediation (cf. Deuteronomy 18:18, 34:10). But concerning the Law of the Messiah, see Isaiah 2:2, 42:4, and 61:1ff.

    16. Just as you then1 requested * of the Lord your God at Horeb (with the giving of the Law), on the day of (public general) assembly (of the Israelite people around the mountain), and said, ‘I will no longer hear the voice of the Lord, my God,’ and I will see no more the great fire (that burned on the mountain), that I not die (from terror and anxiety, but rather Moses shall recite the Word of the Lord to us).’

    * Exodus 20:19; Hebrews 12:19 (Deuteronomy 9:10)

    1 Hebrew: “indeed,” as you spoke of it previously, v. 17, so will it happen. (I will no longer speak with them such a terrifying manner, but rather in a loving manner.)

    17. And the Lord said to me, “They have * spoken well (for without a Mediator there is no dealing with Me).”

    * Deuteronomy 5:28

    18. I will raise up for them a * Prophet like you (of such nature and such reputation, and of such glorious, indeed, far greater gifts and deeds) from their brothers (the Jewish people), and I will put My words ** in His mouth, and He1 shall speak all things to them which I have commanded to Him (He shall indicate My thinking to the people).

    * John 1:45

    † Hebrews 3:2ff, 12:24

    ** John 7:16, 8:26, 40

    1 * He Himself, who is the Lord your God, v. 14, and not more in the fire, but rather in a friendly manner (see Isaiah 52:6; cf. Zephaniah 3:9; John 1:18; Matthew 17:5; etc.).

    19. And whoever will not * hear My words, which He will speak in My name (but rather wantonly despise them and cast them to the wind), I will demand1 it of Him (I will attend to him with temporal and eternal punishment).”

    * Matthew 17:5 (John 12:48)

    1 † How? See Malachi 4:6. This is what is called the ban, which one still sees with one the eyes placed upon the Jews and the land of Israel on account of this dreadful misdeed (cf. Deuteronomy 32:43).

    Useful Applications

    III. CORRECTION: To receive the Word of the Great Prophet, Christ, willingly and follow Him in faithful obedience. (v. 15–19)

  • Notes and Useful Applications for Isaiah 29:17–24 from Das Weimarische Bibelwerk (1877)

    The following is my translation of the notes and useful applications of the Old Testament Reading for the Twelfth Sunday after Trinity, Isaiah 29:16–24, as they are found in Das Weimarische Bibelwerk (1877). Square brackets indicate my own notes and additions. For the useful applications, I recommend the reader see this very helpful article by Dr. Benjamin T. G. Mayes.

    IV. The Call of the Gentiles (Isaiah 29:17–24)

    17. Now, is it not a little while until Lebanon should become a [fruitful] field , and the field be reckoned as a forest?

    Compare Isaiah 32:15.

    By “Lebanon” the Jews are understood, as Luther says, “because the city of Jerusalem was built from Lebanon.” Their ancestors were a beautiful fruitful field at the time of the Old Testament, as Lebanon; however, they had become as a cut down forest and an unfruitful field in the New Testament because of their repudiation of the Gospel. However, on the other hand, by the field the Gentiles are to be understood, who previously, in the time of the Old Testament, were an unfruitful field; however, in the New Testament, they have become a beautiful fruitful field, that is, through Christ they have been enlightened, converted, and made fruitful unto good works.

    The prophetic way of speaking often compares the heathen with Lebanon (see Song of Songs 4:8; Isaiah 60:13), according to which, the reception of the Gentiles and the rejection of the Jews from the Church would here be described (see 18f.).

    18. For at that time the deaf (the Gentiles, who are spiritual deaf) shall hear the words of the book (of the Gospel, see v. 11) and the eyes of the blind (those who are spiritually blind) will see out of the darkness and gloom (they will be enlightened by the Holy Spirit, and will know rightly God in Christ from the Word of the Gospel).

    Compare Isaiah 35:5; 42:7; 60:1; Ephesians 3:9.

    19. And the wretched will once again have joy in the Lord, and the poor among men will be happy in the Holy One (in) Israel (the poor will have the Gospel preached to their comfort and joy of the heart, Matthew 11:5).

    Compare Isaiah 61:1ff; 51:3, 11; Psalm 22:27.

    Hebrew: Joy over strangers.

    20. When the tyrant has an end, and the scoffers are extinguished, and all who watch to cause trouble (Luther: “false doctrine and works”) are destroyed .

    Compare Isaiah 9:4ff.; Psalm 110:2, 5; Zephaniah 3:18.

    21. Who make the people sin through preaching (those who preach only human trifles, or who flatter their hearers, and make cushions for them under their arms and pillows for their heads, Isaiah 13:18) and hunt the one who rebukes them in the gate (publicly and without fear), who turn aside from righteousness by lies (they turn themselves away from the truth by lies, and from unrighteousness by injustice).

    See Matthew 15:3ff.; Amos 5:10.

    Hebrew: through (the oral forthplanted) Word.

    Hebrew: they entice the righteous man (thereby seducing him from good to evil) through vain things (human ordinances).

    22. Therefore, says the Lord, the one who has redeemed Abraham (and led him out out of the idolatrous Ur in Chaldea, Genesis 11:31, 12:1), to the house of Jacob (those according to the Spirit) thus: “Jacob shall no more be disgraced, and his countenance shall no more be ashamed (nor will it become pale when they are converted and steadfastly believe in Christ).

    Compare Isaiah 41:8ff.; Genesis 48:16.

    Hebrew: Now (or from now on).

    Hebrew: Now no more.

    23. For when they see their children, the work of my hands (those I have given rebirth to by water and the Spirit, John 3:5) among them, they will hallow My name, and they will fear (Me) the Holy One in Jacob and (Me) the God of Israel.

    Compare Isaiah 42:21ff.; Psalm 100:3; 2 Corinthians 9:2; 1 Thessalonians 1:7ff.

    Hebrew: at those who press with power (frequently), Matthew 11:12.

    24. For those who had who had an erring spirit, will receive understanding, and those who complain (Luther: “the useless chatterers, such as the enthusiasts who boast of a vain spirit” ) will allow themselves to be taught (although they indeed had previously sharply fought for their errors).

    Compare Acts 9:5ff.; 2 Corinthians 10:15.

    Hebrew: the rebellious murmurers, see John 6:52, 61; Acts 17:32; 1 Corinthians 1:24ff.

    Useful Applications

    IV. Doctrine/Teaching: That through the Word of the Gospel, those men who receive it in faith will be graced, quickened, and made joyful, v. 18–19; Doctrine/Teaching: That on the other hand, the despising of the [Gospel] causes the judgement of blindness, v. 10ff.; Comfort: That God will hold His Christian people in grace, if they only faithfully abide by and with His Word, v. 22f.
